The surface environmental impact from plant and mining operations is expected to be small.
The Company’s proposed solution mining process plan does not produce surface salt tail piles or tailings ponds. Karnalyte Resources eliminates the use of surface salt tail piles (also known as Tails Management Areas, or TMAs) by pumping the waste underground to spent mining caverns and/or deep underground disposal areas.
When the mine is depleted, the field infrastructure is removed and it is expected that the land can be used again for agricultural purposes.
In October 2011, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was submitted to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment (MOE). The EIS will be released for public comment by the MOE once the document has been reviewed and deemed complete. Karnalyte expects this to occur in the first quarter of 2012.
